Old East School and Shastid House

oldschool

The Old East School is architecturally significant.  Designed by John Mills Van Osdel, architect of the Illinois Governor’s Mansion, the Palmer House in Chicago and many other important buildings, the East School is on the National Register of Historic Places.  The Clock Tower is one of the few tower clocks in its original state left in the United States.

Equally significant to the structure itself are the displays and artifacts contained within the East School building.  The first floor houses a museum with many important articles and items documenting the history of Pike County, the State of Illinois, and our country.  The Old East School is home to the Pike County Historical Society. Learn more about them on Facebook at

The museum is popular with history enthusiasts, people doing genealogy work, school children, and everyone looking to take a glimpse into our past.

As a place where residents and visitors can learn about Pike County and US history, renovation and preservation of this local treasure will ensure that the Old East School will continue to inspire current and future generations.

Pittsfield’s historic Old East School, home to the Pike County Historical Society, was listed recently by Landmarks Illinois as one of their “40 Over 40” preservation success stories. The Old East School is part of the rich Civil War and Lincoln history we have right here in our own back yard.
